Fight The Good Fight

What are we pursuing?
  • What fight are you fighting?
  • 1 Timothy 6 v 11-21
  • Paul ends the letter with a challenging and inspirational message. He wants to inspire Timothy to keep going no matter what.
  • Perseverance and Endurance are key.
  • Romans 5 v 1-5 - "1 Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2 through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we boast in the hope of the glory of God. 3 Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; 4 perseverance, character; and character, hope. 5 And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us."
  • The trials come our way in life and our response needs to be that of perseverance because that is what pulls us out the other side but not just that. It is seeing the new horizon as we in the problems and trials.
  • This all builds our character and helps us to become stronger in our Godly character. This allows us to serve God better.
  • Ultimately the process finishes with not just a grown person, a person who is filled with the life and hope of God more than ever before.
  • We have the opportunity to fight the good fight or just be a spectator of the good fight and criticise when people make a mistake.
  • The good fight is not just us fighting the principalities and powers but it is fighting to win people for God, giving them an opportunity to be discipled and come to faith. The hope for salvation breeds this within us.
  • To fight the good fight Paul says to Timothy he needs to keep pursuing these things...
    • Righteousness
    • Godliness
    • Faith
    • Love
    • Gentleness
    • Endurance
  • These things keep us focused on God and follow Him closely then Godliness will be part of us and God will continually make us righteous. From this the others stem and flow to love others, having faith, being gentle and enduring.
  • Hebrews 3 v 1-4 - "1 Therefore, holy brothers and sisters, who share in the heavenly calling, fix your thoughts on Jesus, whom we acknowledge as our apostle and high priest. 2 He was faithful to the one who appointed him, just as Moses was faithful in all God’s house. 3 Jesus has been found worthy of greater honour than Moses, just as the builder of a house has greater honour than the house itself. 4 For every house is built by someone, but God is the builder of everything."
  • This is who we are focusing on, the one who will build us and grow us.
  • We are made righteous by what Jesus did and without Jesus we wouldn't be able to fight the good fight.
  • Are we pursuing the creator or are we pursuing His creations?
  • Fight the good fight, run the race and focus on the creator.
